The 2,000th Gamma Knife radiosurgery performed at N.V. Sklifosofsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine

This is a non-invasive surgery. Gamma rays are targeted precisely at the tumour and destroy the DNA of tumour cells without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue.

The 2,000th Gamma Knife radiosurgery was performed at N.V. Sklifosofsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine, as reported by Sergei Sobyanin on his Twitter account.

“The 2,000th Gamma Knife radiosurgery was performed at Sklif (Sklifosofsky Research Institute) today. I told about this technology in 2016, when we just bought it. This tool allows surgeries on abnormal areas of the brain and vascular structures without making an incision. This method is highly effective and the share of full recoveries is 98 percent,” Sergei Sobyanin said.

The radiosurgery was performed at Radiosurgery Unit by the professional team of a neurosurgeon, a radiologist and a medical physicist.

“The key indication for radiosurgery is metastatic brain tumours. The first Gamma Knife radiosurgery at N.V. Sklifosofsky Research Institute was performed in April 2016. It is often the case that Gamma Knife technology is the only treatment option for patients with malignant brain tumours. Moscow residents can have this surgery for free,” Director of N.V. Sklifosofsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine Sergey Petrikov said.

Gamma Knife-based neurosurgery is non-invasive: it does not involve lancets. To affect the abnormal areas of the brain, surgeons use radioactive gamma-rays that precisely target and destroy the DNA of tumour cells without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue with the help of extremely precise computer technology.

This high-tech medical treatment is provided at 48 Moscow in-patient hospitals in 20 different fields for more than 1,400 deceases. This therapy is available for all Moscow residents referred by their diagnosing medical institution.
