Students Take a Stab at Designing Public Spaces for Universities
Skoltech will have eight public spaces reflecting specific climates.
The Urban Competencies Center of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) has developed practical guidelines on designing university public spaces. The guidelines were unveiled at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) on July 10 as part of the Ostrov 10-22 training program. Skoltech is also hosting a participatory design workshop featuring educators and students from more than 100 Russian universities.
The workshop will result in eight public spaces created on the premises of Skoltech. Tied to particular climates – windy, hot, cold and moderate – each public space will have a unique visual anchor and numerous art objects, such as an interactive tennis table and a quantum portal.
The best public space will selected on July 22, the last day of the workshop.
Participatory design is popular in many countries. The ASI experts have applied this concept to the design of university campuses.
